Instagram chats look different
Instagram DMs are rarely the whole relationship — they're a second-channel behavior. That changes everything about how to read them. High-volume, reaction-heavy, shared-reel-dominant: these are patterns you see almost nowhere else.
Reaction volume as a signal
On Instagram, reactions (heart, laugh, fire) do a huge amount of conversational work. A chat dominated by reactions but light on text often signals a 'low-bandwidth, high-frequency' relationship — touch-points without real depth.
Shared content as conversation
A big chunk of Instagram DMs are forwarded reels and posts. In the analysis, these are counted separately from text — they represent shared interest and a kind of ambient co-presence rather than explicit communication.
Voice notes
When voice notes start showing up, something has usually intensified. A chat that's been text-only for months and suddenly gets voice notes is a different relationship than the one it was before, even if the frequency hasn't changed.
The IG export is JSON
Instagram gives you a JSON export via Meta's download-your-data flow. It's slower to request (sometimes a day) but the structured format lets the parser separate reactions, voice notes, and forwarded content cleanly.
